How Long Do Central Air Conditioners Last?

Should I Repair or Replace My Air Conditioner?
Unless it is a relatively small and simple repair, consider replacing your A/C if it’s over 10 years old. Older A/Cs require more frequent repairs, so even if we fix one issue, there’s an increased risk another will arise in the not-so-distant future.
How Often Should an A/C be Serviced?
Most manufacturers and HVAC companies recommended yearly maintenance. This is probably a bit more frequently than you need. Every two to three years should suffice. How Often to Change an A/C Filter?
The furnace and the A/C use the same air filter. The frequency of this air filter replacement depends on a number of factors – how thick is the filter, how efficient is it, how often are you running the furnace fan, and so on. As a rule of thumb, 1″ thick filters should be replaced every 3 to 4 months, 2″ thick every 4 to 6 months, and 4″ thick every 6 to 12 months.
