Nowadays gas furnaces are divided into two groups based upon their energy efficiency: the 80% efficient group (standard efficiency), and the over 90% efficient group (high efficiency). When you look at the various manufacturers, they tend to have three models to choose from in each group; a single stage furnace, a two stage, and a variable speed unit. HEAT PUMPS (BOTH HEATING & COOLING)
Heat pumps look a lot like air conditioners and are internally very similar, but unlike air conditioners, they perform both heating and cooling. This enables them to not only provide year round comfort, but here in the Northwest where our climate is relatively mild, they offer greater energy efficiency over gas furnaces. Also, you can combine a heat pump with a gas furnace and achieve the maximum in energy efficiency with a hybrid system.
